Annecy
Posted 2008 January 22 by justACROAround the well known lake Annecy I know 3 take off places. On the north of the lake there are two large start place with rug. There is a parking place next to the lower (N45.51.181 E6 13.345) its landing place is at (N45.50.924 E6 12.786). You can reach the upper (N45 48.794 E6 15.162) by car but parking is not allowed there, someone has to take the car down or you can leave the it at the restaurant and then 10 minutes walk. From the main landing place (N45 47.080 E6 13.289) they take you up for 5 euro by minibus.

Walensee
Posted 2008 January 22 by justACROWalensee is perfect place for safety training and acro because the altitude is about 800 meter.
Walensee - the lake
The take off place is reachable by car (N47 08.522 E9 16.033 1300 meter. Next to the lake there are many grass fields to land eg. (N47 07.403 E9 18.416) - 430 meter. Here there is a military air base! As I heard you can fly close to the mountain but if you want to cross the valley then you should fly high. The valley can be used by the airplanes...
Bohinj
Posted 2008 January 22 by justACROAround the beautiful lake of Bohinj there are several startplaces.
The most suitable for acro training and competitions is the Vogel. This is a ski resort, situated south above the lake, at 1665 m AMSL. Best wind direction is NE. Take the cable car and the chairlift to Orlove Glave. From the top of this chairlift the take-off is just 100 m to the left. You can reach the lake about 800 m high by a simple glide.
The cost for the cable car and chairlift is around 2000 sit (8 EUR) for one way.
Because this area is a National Park, you have to pay around 4 EUR for the car parking.
Madeira
Posted 2008 January 22 by justACROOn the Madeira Island there are about 25 startplaces and few of them is very good for acro.
- Cabo Girao: This is the second highest coastal cliff in the world (580 meters high). Height difference 545 meters. The landing place is in Camara do Lobos at sealevel on the beach. Good wind is S, from midday to afternoon usually good to fly. No toplanding but strong cliff thermals up to 8m/s. It takes 15 minutes from landing to take-off by car.
Monte Carlo
Posted 2008 January 22 by justACROThanks to the beneficent influence of the Mediterran Sea, this site is suitable for acro all the year. Even in the winter, during the day the temperature could be much more than 10 degrees and thermalable days are quite often. But be careful, due to the microclimate, the wind’s direction could change fast after sunset. You reach the water at around 500 meters, but it's quite easy to get higher on sunny days.
Startplace: It’s accessible by car and than few minutes walk. The main take-off site is big enough for 4-5 glider and it’s covered by carpet.
Harissa
Posted 2008 January 22 by justACROHarissa is situated 26 km far from Beirut in Mount Lebanon. It’s accessible by car. From Jouneih, follow the serpentine road to the church of Harissa and then go further few kilometers. It’s better to go with the locals first.
Ohrid
Posted 2008 January 22 by justACROThe Ohrid lake is the bigest touristic place in Macedonia. It is an ancient town with 365 churches and many ancient monuments. The mountain is faces to the west and almost all take offs are turned to west. The take off we mostly use is 30km from the town southwords. Asfalt road leeds to the grassy take off (1600asl) landing at 690asl. The mountain is very steep and there are strong thermals lead to 3000 meters and more. What is specific for the terrain is that there is not wind drift.
Ölüdeniz
Posted 2008 January 22 by justACROÖlüdeniz is situated at southwestern coast of Türkey and it’s probably one of the best acro sites. The closest airport is in Dalaman city, 60 kilometers away from Ölüdeniz. There are two main take-offs on the Babadag mountain (1967 meters), one at 1910 meters suitable for north and south wind, and the other at 1700 meters for west. These are accessible only by trucks through cedar forests. When the road is closed by snow during winter months, a take off over the sea at 800 meters is used. Trucks to the take offs starts from the beach every couple of hours, from sunrise to sunset.
Monte Tamaro
Posted 2008 January 22 by justACROMount Tamaro is good for training Acro in the morning. The Startplace is just 20meters away from the station. The landing field is about 50m away from the station. So you can do many flight's in a short time. There is no water.
Safety-Info's:
Take care of the valley-wind. After 12-13o'clock it can be strong and cause turbulences at the landing place. If you're already airborne and you notice that the wind is strong at the landing field, so you can fly to the south to Bironico. There is a big grass field beside the highway.
Pokhara
Posted 2008 January 22 by justACROSarangkot (1500m ASL) is the main flying site in Nepal. This ridge is situated in the Annapurna region, only 20 minutes far from Pokhara city, on the northern side of the Phewa lake. The startplace is accessible by car (it’s unique at this area!) and it’s the only purpose built take off in the country. The height difference is 700 meters.
Besides the great acro possibilities, this area has big XC potential also:
West: Along the lake valley.
North: To the foothills of 8000m peaks like the Annapurnas and Machapuchare.
East: Along the Himalayen foothills.
Gerlitzen
Posted 2008 January 22 by justACROOssiacher See is situated in southern Austria, only few kilometers far from Villach and I think this is one of the best places to practice above water. It’s easily accessible by motorways (A10, A11, A2).
