The 2nd Aerobatics World Championships is cancelled... (again)

After 8 successfull editions of one of the oldest and most celebrated acro paragliding competitions the organizers of Acroaria has announced that due to economical reasons and lack of sponsors, they are unable to run the World Championships in Omegna in august 2010...
Just like in 2008 when the same thing happened with the norwegien Vertigo-Voss. The both cases (as well as last year's cancelled comps) clearly show nowadays difficult situation that the event organizers has to face, who are often risking their own money to keep the competition scene alive for us in a sport which somehow doesn't attract thousands of spectators, the medias and big sponsors...

Hi Folks,

I think this we see is just a visible manifestation of the sport itself. For many reasons, other sports arise and take the media and sponsors eyes and money. In my opinion, this is due to the real way we are doing our sport. On paragliding scene, there's no "collective project", each one just does it for him (or her) self. Not only on the acro scene (where people is more close to each other), but is a kind of mistake of the paragliding sport.

As long as paragliding pilots and the market stills behave like this, we will have no chance to make it well. For example, the whole competition scene is "olimpics-oriented", what means "amateur sport", what means "no money". We could watch the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals), how they have organized the sport not only to be a medias blockbuster, but also moving a lot of money on sponsors, the circuit, etcetera. And, in fact, ASP is an association from the surfing professionals, not from burocrats and organizers. We can change...

There's a way? Of course, but it depends on the paragliding people starting something that is not only "to be the champion", but also to make paragliding something interesting for the market itself. I don't have the key to the solution, but we should start thinking about making paragliding, a real sport for the medias.

Regards and the best acro for everyone. May anyone in any way, benefit from all of this.

To bad. Like last year the sponsor do not belive in the adveticing in this comp, and when u need like 150 000 EURO is hard to make the ends meet.
I think we will se less competitions in the future, becuse its to expancive to make them.

Man . . . . that really sucks. Being that it was the guys at Acroaria, I thought for sure it was gonna happen. But now, like Vertigo, the great comp at Omegna has fallen.

I was soooooo looking forward to competing in this against all my friends in 2010. Just sucks.

Well, at least they told us well in advance so we can plan something else!?!?
