Official Statement by the Aerobatic Subcommittee concerning the 2013 APWC final overall rankings

During its first 2 years of existence, the new “Evolution” competition format continuosly needed to be adapted and improved. Due to the lack of other occasions, this tuning was done during the APWC competition season. This was necessary in order to be prepared for a possible jump in quality of acro paragliding competitions in the near future.

The majority of the changes were suggested and requested by pilots. All changes have been discussed and implemented after agreement between the judges and the pilots' committee.

Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding, during the briefing of the last competition of the 2013 season (Acrojam in Obertraun, AUT) it was mistakenly communicated that the repetition of the 4 non directional maneuvers (Tail slide, Full stall, Dynamic full stall and Pitch pendulum) would now be allowed without restriction, and that these maneuvers could be performed several times without limitation nor penalization.

The possibility that something might go wrong when applying modifications to the judging and scoring system and to Acropyx software was always taken into account. In fact, official APWC results hasn't been released yet, because investigation was underway. The mistake was finally discovered 5 days after the end of the competition: the scoring software was updated according to the new rule communicated during the briefing and a correct ranking has been recalculated.

Normally such tiny penalties hardly affect the results. As a matter of fact, the Acrojam synchro competition and the 2013 APWC synchro overall ranking didn't undergo any change. Also the classification of the Acrojam solo competition has only 2 insignificant changes in the lower part.

But due to the incredible proximity in the 2013 APWC solo overall ranking of the top pilots Marvin Ogger and Horacio Llorens, the final classification is influenced by these very small differences. Positions 4 and 5 for French pilots Tim Alongi and Eliot Nochez are also inverted. All remaining positions are not affected by these changes.

FACTS:

  • A misinterpretation of the implementation of a new rule during the competition Acrojam in Austria led to the unjustified attribution of 0.408 choreography penalty points to the Spanish Horacio Llorens because the Acropyx scroring system had not yet been updated accordingly. Without this penalty Horacio Llorens would have overtaken Marvin Ogger from Germany in the overall APWC ranking
  • At the end of an entire season, the difference of 0.179 points between the 2 pilots is insignificant and negligible
  • Horacio Llorens deserves the title, because he's actually won it on the points.
  • Marvin Ogger, after one week during which he's been considered as the unofficial winner, doesn't deserve to loose the title fur such an inconsequential difference.

CONCLUSION: having deeply analized the facts, the judges involved, together with the Aerobatic subcommittee chair man, decided by unanimity to revise the scoring of the competition Acrojam according to the criteria actually communicated to the pilots during the briefing. The final, overall 2013 APWC ranking is updated accordingly.

As a consequence, the title of

WINNER OF THE 2013 APWC - AEROBATIC PARAGLIDING WORLD CUP

is assigned ex aequo to both pilots

HORACIO LLORENS (SPAIN)
&
MARVIN OGGER (GERMANY)

The panel of judges and the chair man of the Aerobatic subcommittee congratulate the winners for the great success, deeply regret any inconvenience that this occurrence might have caused, and will do it's best to prevent similar circumstances from arising again.
